Mumbai: The abrupt withdrawal of the monsoon, followed by soaring temperatures and high humidity, is creating challenging health conditions across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Medical experts warn that these sudden weather fluctuations can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, viral infections, respiratory illnesses, stomach infections, and worsening of chronic medical conditions, particularly among children, senior citizens, and people with pre-existing health issues.
Doctors at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road say the sharp transition from cool, rainy weather to hot and humid conditions places additional stress on the body’s ability to regulate temperature. This can trigger fluctuations in blood pressure, increase the risk of heart-related complications, aggravate asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lead to dehydration, dizziness, fatigue, urinary infections, and electrolyte imbalances. Children are also more vulnerable to viral fevers, gastrointestinal infections, and heat-related illnesses due to their developing immune systems.
Dr. Jinendra K Jain Consultant Diabetologist and Physician from Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said, “Rapid weather changes can significantly affect individuals with hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders, and respiratory illnesses. Senior citizens are particularly susceptible to dehydration and heat stress because their body’s cooling mechanisms are less efficient. Similarly, young children can lose fluids quickly and may develop fever, diarrhoea, or exhaustion if adequate hydration is not maintained. People should not ignore symptoms such as persistent fatigue, dizziness, breathlessness, chest discomfort, high fever, or sudden fluctuations in blood pressure, as early medical evaluation can prevent serious complications.”
Health experts at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road recommend staying well hydrated, consuming freshly prepared balanced meals, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, wearing light cotton clothing, and ensuring that children and elderly family members drink sufficient fluids throughout the day. Individuals with chronic illnesses should continue their prescribed medications, monitor blood pressure and blood sugar regularly, and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
With unpredictable weather patterns becoming increasingly common, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road urges citizens to stay alert, follow preventive health measures, and prioritise timely medical consultation to reduce the risk of seasonal illnesses and weather-related complications.
