“The traditional craft of Jasdan Patari from Gujarat has been approved for Geographical Indication (GI) registration, by GI Registry for the year 2025-26, marking a significant milestone for artisans of Jasdan block in Rajkot district. Practised for generations, this unique craft is a testament to Gujarat’s rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) supported the GI registration under its Gramya Vikas Nidhi (GVN) through grant assistance for awareness generation, documentation, and the application process. The initiative was facilitated by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE).
Earlier, NABARD had extended similar support in Gujarat for two other products —Ajrakh Block Print (sanctioned in 2021–22) in Kutch and Amalsad Chikoo (sanctioned in 2020–21) in Navsari, both of which have successfully obtained GI registration.
The GI tag provides legal protection to the craft against imitation, enhances its market visibility, and opens up better opportunities for domestic and international trade. It also strengthens market linkages for farmers in the case of agricultural products.
NABARD stated that this recognition will play a vital role in preserving traditional knowledge, strengthening rural livelihoods, and encouraging greater participation of youth and women in artisan communities.
