Mumbai: India’s infrastructure ambitions have entered a new phase. Backed by annual capital expenditure of around INR 11 lakh crore and landmark programmes such as PM Gati Shakti and the National Infrastructure Pipeline, the country is undertaking one of the largest infrastructure buildouts in its history. Yet, even as investment reaches record levels, project execution remains a persistent challenge. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s (MoSPI) latest project monitoring report, infrastructure projects costing INR 150 crore and above have accumulated INR 5.6 lakh crore in cost overruns, with the revised cost of 1,981 projects increasing to INR 42.8 lakh crore, underscoring the growing importance of efficient project planning and execution.
While investment has remained a key enabler of India’s infrastructure growth, execution continues to be one of the sector’s biggest challenges. Data published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) consistently shows that several large infrastructure projects experience time and cost overruns, highlighting the need for stronger project planning, coordination, and execution capabilities.
Today’s infrastructure projects demand far more than technical expertise. They require professionals who can manage contracts, procurement, finance, stakeholder engagement, sustainability, regulatory compliance, and multidisciplinary teams while navigating increasingly complex project environments.
The sector is also undergoing rapid technological transformation. Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital twins, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and digital project management platforms are changing how infrastructure projects are planned, monitored and delivered. At the same time, India’s infrastructure landscape is expanding beyond traditional construction into renewable energy, urban infrastructure, logistics, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure, creating demand for professionals with specialised management capabilities.
As a result, domain-focused management education is becoming increasingly important in preparing professionals who understand both the technical and managerial dimensions of infrastructure delivery. Programmes that integrate project management, construction technology, infrastructure finance, contracts, sustainability and digital technologies equip graduates with the skills required to manage complex infrastructure projects from planning through execution.
