MGL becomes the First CGD to Partner with Department of Posts for Gas Meter Reading Services
Mumbai : Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), one of India’s leading City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies, today announced a strategic partnership with the Department of Posts (India Post), Maharashtra Circle, to conduct domestic gas (PNG) meter reading services through India Post’s field network. The initiative will be rolled out in a phased manner, with South Mumbai identified for the initial pilot, leading a wider extension to other parts of the city in subsequent phases.
With this initiative MGL becomes the first City Gas Distribution (CGD) Company to partner with the Department of Posts for this customer-centric activity.
As part of the partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations, uniformed India Post officials will visit MGL’s domestic consumers to record meter readings using a dedicated mobile application. Each reading will be verified through a photograph of the meter display, with the data transmitted directly to MGL’s systems through an Application Programming Interface (API), ensuring accuracy and end-to-end traceability. Visits will be conducted strictly against the household database shared by MGL, and in a strong endorsement of household comfort and trust, the deployment will make maximum feasible use of India Post’s women field staff for these home visits.
The MoU was signed on 07 July 2026 by Mr. Krishnan Selvapandian, Asst. Vice President Contracts & Procurement, MGL and Ms. Kaiya Arora, Postmaster General, Mumbai Region, in the gracious presence of Mr Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, Mr Asim Khan, Sr. Superintendent, Mumbai East Division, Mr. Praveer Kumar Srivastava, Managing Director, Mahanagar Gas Limited and Mr. Ajay Sinha, Deputy Managing Director, Mahanagar Gas Limited.
Mr. Praveer Kumar Srivastava, Managing Director, Mahanagar Gas Limited said, “We are honoured to partner with India Post for domestic gas reading services. It allows us to draw on India Post’s assured last-mile service and trusted presence in every neighbourhood of Mumbai to make our meter reading process more accurate, transparent and seamless. Initiating it in South Mumbai, during the pilot phase, gives us a strong foundation to build-on before extending it across our network of domestic consumers.
Mr. Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle commented, “This partnership enables us to leverage our wide and trusted network in a new area of service. It also reinforces the confidence that households place in India Post. We are looking forward to work closely with MGL to deliver a reliable, efficient and consumer friendly service delivery.”
The partnership will strengthen operational efficiency for MGL by combining its database with India Post’s extensive last-mile delivery network. For India Post, the initiative opens a new avenue of non-postal revenue and offers its field personnel an additional, structured earning opportunity, with each deployed official set to receive an incentive for every successfully updated household reading.
Following the completion of the pilot phase in South Mumbai, both MGL and the Department of Posts will jointly review outcomes on accuracy, coverage and household experience, with a view to expanding the service to other regions of Mumbai in a phased manner and over time, to other geographical areas served by MGL.
