Mumbai : PNG being a safer, economical, convenient and ecofriendly fuel, Government of India is encouraging people to switch to PNG for a cleaner environment. The Government of India has initiated a nationwide drive for expeditious expansion of domestic PNG connections in areas where City Gas Distribution (CGD) infrastructure has already been established. Sufficient natural gas is domestically available to cater to the needs of domestic consumers while India has to rely heavily on imports for LPG. Shifting to PNG will help in reducing financial burden on imported LPG and provide ease and convenience to customers.
The Government of India has mandated under the Essential Commodities Act notified vide its Gazette Notification dated 24th March 2026, that urban households with access to PNG should switch to PNG. As per Clause 7 of the Gazette notification, the supply of LPG cylinders to addresses in areas where PNG is otherwise available may cease within 90 days from the effective date cited in each individual notice.
Accordingly, it has been appealed to all housing societies, where PNG is available to advise its society members to switch to PNG else LPG supply to them may be stopped after 90 days of being notified in gasified societies. This measure is being implemented in close coordination with the respective Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), who are similarly under a statutory obligation not to supply LPG cylinders to addresses located within areas covered by an operational PNG network.
MGL has reached over 32 lakhs households, across its areas of operation in Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur & Dharashiv, Chitradurg, Davengere and has laid steel and polyethylene pipelines of over 8000 kms to reach many more households.
Residents who have not yet applied for a PNG connection are strongly advised to initiate the registration process at the earliest and avail the benefits of convenience, savings and safety. The complete process for providing a PNG connection, including last mile connectivity, installation, and commissioning may take up to two months, depending upon site specific conditions. Therefore, it is advised not to delay application until the final date stipulated in the notice.
MGL has launched a range of flexible and customer-friendly payment plans aimed at enhancing affordability and accelerating PNG adoption across residential customers.
Further, a special initiative is underway to bring Government institutions under the PNG networks.
Mr Praveer Kumar Srivastava, Managing Director, Mahanagar Gas Limited said, “We urge consumers to avail their PNG connection at the earliest opportunity and avoid any disruption to their domestic gas supply. Our marketing & customer care teams are fully equipped to assist residents through every step of the registration and installation process as we remain committed to ensuring a smooth and seamless transition for all residents in areas where PNG infrastructure has been commissioned.”
