Mumbai : MedTherapy, a cancer gene therapy biotechnology company with its global manufacturing facility based in NOIDA within New Delhi NCR, released today its strategies and vision to make India the global hub of manufacturing gene therapies focusing primarily upon the innovative life-saving treatment called “CAR-T” cell therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor -T cell therapy).
CAR-T cell therapy for cancer, first approved in the United States by FDA in 2017, has been heralded as potential ‘cure’ for cancers. Since then, several CAR-T cell therapies have been approved with impressive clinical responses from cancer patients. However, currently the industry is suffering from several manufacturing related constraints which are severely limiting its immediate access and affordability to this potentially life-saving treatment. MedTherapy has overcome all those manufacturing challenges.
Gene therapies which are often deemed to be future of medicine and mankind, use genetic engineering to empower, repair, or replace genes to restore normal or enhanced functioning. Gene therapy’s unprecedented potential lies in that with a single dose of treatment it can potentially cure a disease instead of its life-long management or left with no other alternative treatment available. It is being explored for a wide spectrum of diseases including cancer, diabetes, genetic diseases, hematological conditions, infectious diseases including HIV, metabolic disorders among many others. However, given the very complex manufacturing technology, it suffers from two existential challenges: exorbitant cost and archaic manufacturing process often taking several weeks to manufacture for each individual patient.
MedTherapy, a global biotech with its technology center in Boston, USA, and global manufacturing facility in New Delhi NCR has developed the next generation technology which dramatically reduces the cost and time to manufacture CAR-T cell therapies by more than seventy percent – one of the most efficient in the world. MedTherapy operates with two separate business units: as a CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization) to manufacture CAR-T cell therapies and viral vectors for other gene therapy companies’ products; and co-development of our own new CAR-T therapy products. Our own product co-development has led to very promising armored CAR-T therapies for solid tumors including brain, breast, lung, skin and bone cancers entering global clinical trials – the details to be released in our succeeding communications. The blood cancer CAR-T clinical trial in US, now entering clinical trial in India, has demonstrated one of the best response rates and safety profile among lymphoma patients – and is manufactured in just one day in contrast to several weeks for the industry.
MedTherapy is funded by TATA Sons. It was incorporated in India in 2020 and has been working in collaboration with twenty-two global organizations in India, USA, Canada, and Europe including Harvard University and CIPLA Limited. “The current manufacturing crisis faced by the CAR-T cell therapy industry in particular and the cell and gene therapy industry in general is a global crisis. Our integrated manufacturing model ameliorates all the major constraints and provides efficient, compliant and speedy manufacturing of both – viral vectors, and CAR-T cell therapy products at global scales. We are able to manufacture for any organization working in
